- Number of days:1
- Season: all year around
Issyk lake is located in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains at an altitude of 1756 meters above sea level (in the Ile-Alatau Natural Park). It is famous not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the CIS countries. It competes in its beauty with the most famous mountain lakes of the Alps and the Caucasus.
This lake was formed about 8-10 thousand years ago as a result of a catastrophic earthquake. After the collapse of the gorge, it was blocked by a dense dam (about 300 m height). Behind the dam at an altitude of 1756 m was formed a deep lake (50 to 90 m depth), but in a sunny day you could see its bottom.
In the middle of the XIX century, the lake was recognized in Russia and Europe. Every explorer who visited this region considered his duty to see the lake. One of the first researchers was a Russian geographer and statistician Piotr Semenov Tien-Shansky, who was astonished by the purest transparent water and beautiful dense bluish color of the lake.
Unfortunately, in 1963, everything changed in a matter of hours. Meltwater from the Zharsay glacier flowed into the Zharsai Moraine Lake. When the lake was filled with water, it broke through a natural granite lintel. Giant mudslide of stones and mud went down to Issyk lake and it was destroyed within four hours. The mudflow caused significant damages to the city of Issyk, nearby villages, camps and resorts. Entire streets and quarters were destroyed.
By the early 1990s, the damaged village and the water drainage structures had been restored. Currently, the lake exists, but its size is half the size of the original one.
